If you are looking for a quick and easy guacamole recipe, you are in the right place. My go-to recipe is made with just a handful of healthy ingredients. I serve it as an appetizer with tortilla chips, as a topping with tacos, and even mix it up by dipping carrots or celery sticks into this delicious, bright green goodness.

This healthy guacamole recipe is so much more wholesome and tasty than any store-bought guacamole  – and as an added bonus, it takes only five minutes to make. In this article, I will walk you through my delicious homemade guacamole recipe so that you can enjoy a spoonful of avocado bliss.

Best Guacamole Recipe

I typically make this recipe as written – but there are many healthy ways of making guacamole at home. However, this selection of ingredients and processes is my go-to method for the perfect “guac.” I firmly believe that this is the best guacamole recipe out there… but you will have to see for yourself. After you whip up this tasty blend, let me know how it goes in the comments section. I can’t wait to hear what you think!

Homemade Guacamole Recipe

Let’s get down to the good stuff. I want to share this five-minute guacamole recipe with you exactly as I make it, but there are also some substitutions that you can try to transform this classic guacamole recipe into your very own.

First off, I know that some people are raw tomato haters – don’t worry. I think that the raw tomatoes add something special to this guacamole dip, but the only thing that will change if you omit them is the texture. If you want to add a little extra zing, finely chop some red onion to introduce some bite to your guac.

Next, let’s talk about the spices. I typically opt for powdered spices in my guacamole: after all, less chopping equals less time in the kitchen and more time enjoying healthy guacamole dip with your family. If you prefer the real thing – minced garlic, raw onion, etc. – don’t let me hold you back! If you want to add a little extra zing, finely chop some red onion to introduce some bite to your guac instead of using onion powder.

Ingredients

These are the guacamole ingredients I use to whip up a delicious batch of fresh guacamole:

  • 3 medium ripe avocados
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp. onion powder (or sub for 1/4 cup chopped red onion)
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt (plus more if desired)
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • 2 tbsp. fresh lime juice
  • 2 tbsp. fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 2 small tomatoes, diced (if using cherry tomatoes, cut into quarters)

Instructions

Step 1: Mash the avocados

You cam mash the avocado using either a fork or a potato masher, but leave it a little chunkier than you would like. That’s because this authentic guacamole will get smoother as you mix in the rest of the simple ingredients. Make sure you are using a ripe avocado, because an under-ripe specimen will yield tough, fibrous pieces in your guac.

Step 2: Mix in the Lime Juice and Cilantro

Add in the lime juice and the spices and stir until they are evenly distributed throughout the bowl. If you want to make your traditional guacamole extra fresh, try using fresh lime juice instead of bottled. Just squeeze half a lime into the avocado mixture and stir. An added bonus is that lime juice will help keep guacamole from turning brown.

Step 3: Add Tomato, Cilantro, and Onion

Next up, add your roughly chopped whole ingredients. Remember, if you don’t want tomato or red onion, it’s perfectly fine to omit the tomato and use onion powder instead. If you are using tomato, dice it up into fine pieces so it’s not too dominant in the guacamole.

Step 4: Let Sit for 15-30 Minutes

In order to get the most delicious flavor, put your guacamole into an airtight container and let it sit in the fridge for 15-30 minutes. This will allow all of the flavors combine and yield the best healthy guacamole you can imagine. But no worries if you can’t wait to try your creation – I usually dig in right away!

Step 5: Store Leftover Guacamole

Guacamole is best when it’s fresh – but with the proper equipment, guacamole can last for up to three days in the refrigerator. To keep guacamole from browning, press a layer of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the top of the guacamole. Even if you are already using an airtight container, this method will keep your guacamole as safe as possible and prevent the guacamole from browning and going bad.

How to make Guacamole Extra Special

If you are looking to put a twist on my recipe and make homemade guacamole extra special, there are plenty of add-ins and changes that you can try. For instance, sometimes I like to switch it up and make a spicy guacamole. You can add some finely chopped jalapeno and a pinch of cayenne powder to add a little kick to your recipe.

Alternately, you can make this mexican dip take a tropical turn with the addition of chopped mango or pineapple. In addition to the healthy fats from the avocado, adding a tropical fruit can give your dip a little bit of sweetness and tang that’s a nice contrast to the smooth avocado.

But at the end of the day, the element that makes your guacamole truly spacial is that it’s a homemade, healthy recipe that your family is sure to love. You can cater it to the needs of your individual crew and create a dip that your family will get excited about every time you make it.

What to Serve With Guacamole

I use guacamole made with fresh and healthy ingredients all the time. You’ll love this recipe as a side dish for a cookout, a topping for tacos, or even a breakfast spread for avocado toast. Guacamole is generally considered a lunch or dinner item, but I say why not eat guacamole every meal? It’s so easy to make, and it goes well with all kinds of different dishes. For instance, you could try it with…

  • Scrambled eggs and salsa
  • A cheeseburger or hamburger
  • Tortilla chips
  • Rice and beans
  • Avocado toast
  • Sweet potato chips
  • Deviled eggs
  • Tacos or burritos
  • Mexican casseroles
  • Healthy plant based veggie burgers
  • Chicken melts
  • And more!
